SurfCycle
– a powerful stand-up scooter designed for speed and agility
The Surfcycle combines the agility and riding style of electric kick scooters with the power and safety features of motorcycles, capable of reaching highway speeds of up to 80mph. Its narrow design makes it ideal for lane-splitting in urban traffic, and its standing position offers better visibility and a unique riding experience reminiscent of surfing or skateboarding.
- It uses a Piaggio scooter front-end with larger wheels and a robust suspension for stability and safety.
- The Surfcycle features an 8-kW hub motor, providing around 80 miles (129 km) of range.
- The design includes a luggage rack inspired by airport baggage trolleys, making it practical for commuting.
- Its narrow handlebars and upright riding position allow for efficient lane-splitting in heavy traffic.
Molnar – Calfee are seeking seed round investors to help take the project to the next level. Contact craig@calfeedesign.com if interested to learn more.
“It’s fast, it’s smooth. Acceleration is fierce. It feels a bit like gliding across the street, with a really smooth, flowing feel to it. Cornering and balancing at low speeds — all of it is a lot of fun. I recommend it. Respect.”
Zeno
– a complete energy ecosystem
Calfee Design worked with Zeno to develop and build their original prototypes.
Zeno is a company focused on improving transportation and energy access by providing electric vehicles and flexible energy solutions. Their goal is to make electric mobility and reliable power more affordable and accessible, especially in areas with unreliable infrastructure.
- Offers a flexible battery system that users can charge at home, at swap stations, or while traveling, helping to keep homes and vehicles powered.
- Durable motorcycles designed for rough terrain, offering an alternative to fuel-powered vehicles with less maintenance and lower costs.
- Easy-to-swap, long-lasting batteries with a range of charging options.
Gyrocycle
– a street legal aircraft
Craig Calfee built the first gyrocycle together with Dezső Molnár at Calfee Design in California.
The gyrocycle is an innovative hybrid vehicle that merges motorcycle dynamics with rotorcraft flight capabilities. The goal is to create a new type of extreme sport — a road-capable motorcycle that can also take to the skies.
- Built from standard motorcycle parts, aiming for flight capabilities.
- Powered by a 150 horsepower engine, with a propeller and a free-spinning rotor that generates lift.
- Uses a unique steering mechanism, different from standard motorcycles, involving two front wheels for balance.
- Currently in its second prototype phase, aiming to refine thrust and stability.
- The goal is to create a lightweight flying vehicle that could potentially beat road traffic.
